The Directorate of Humanitarian and Social Affairs of the ECOWAS Commission recently completed a thorough four-day assessment trip to Togo to evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing humanitarian aid efforts in response to severe flooding and food insecurity challenges.

The mission, led by Director Dr. Sintiki Tarfa-Ugbe from July 15th to 18th, 2024, focused on assessing the impact of ECOWAS’ Humanitarian Response Mechanism (EHRM) in various communities.

M E Mission To Togo

In April 2023, following a workshop in Lomé, the ECOWAS Commission allocated significant funds to assist communities affected by flooding and food insecurity in Togo. Specifically, Togo received $722,561 for flood assistance and $351,217 for food and nutrition support to strengthen resilience and aid recovery efforts.

During the mission, Dr. Tarfa-Ugbe emphasized the importance of collaboration with strategic partners, government agencies, and implementing bodies such as the United Nations World Food Program (WFP). The delegation engaged extensively with local authorities and community leaders in central and northern Togo, including Anié, Sotouboua, Sokodé, and Kara, to gauge the impact of humanitarian aid on beneficiaries’ daily lives and livelihoods directly.

Dr Tarfa-Ugbe highlighted ECOWAS’ commitment to impactful humanitarian interventions, stating, “We are dedicated to improving the living standards of our citizens and ensuring dignity for all.” Approximately 2,717 households and 14,000 individuals have benefited from ECOWAS’ assistance in Togo, achieving an 80% implementation rate within six months.

Beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude for the life-changing support, including essential food aid, agricultural inputs, and training in modern farming techniques. This support has enhanced food security and empowered local communities to improve farm productivity and allocate resources to other critical aspects of improving their livelihoods.

Community leaders commended ECOWAS for its timely and effective response, emphasizing its pivotal role in promoting regional resilience and recovery. The success of these initiatives reflects ECOWAS’ commitment to accountability and sustainable development across member states, ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those most in need.

Dr. Tarfa-Ugbe concluded, “This mission has provided valuable insights into the tangible benefits of our humanitarian efforts. We are unwavering in supporting communities to rebuild and thrive amidst adversity.”
