In a diplomatic meeting held on Thursday, July 11, 2024, His Excellency Francis Chuks Njoaguani, Acting ECOWAS Resident Representative in Burkina Faso, welcomed His Excellency Dietrich Becker, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ouagadougou.
Discussions centred on cooperation between ECOWAS and Germany, particularly through the German development agency GIZ, and collaborative efforts with the European Union. Key topics included the decision by the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to withdraw from ECOWAS, the issue of irregular youth migration from the region to Europe, and progress on the ECOWAS single currency initiative.
Regarding withdrawing AES countries from ECOWAS, His Excellency Njoaguani emphasized ECOWAS’ commitment to resolving the situation positively. He highlighted recent regional Heads of State efforts, including appointing high-level mediators to engage in dialogue with AES countries.
The German Ambassador acknowledged the pragmatic approach taken by AES Heads of State during their first Summit and expressed optimism about future collaboration between AES and ECOWAS. He reaffirmed Germany’s readiness to support ECOWAS in advancing regional integration efforts.
Both diplomats expressed satisfaction with the productive discussions, which contributed to a deeper understanding of current issues and strengthened cooperative relations between ECOWAS and Germany.
