(Seoul = Provided by Yonhap News) [ipn News] On the 17th, seniors of the People Power Party poured out bitter words toward the government and the party regarding the crushing defeat in the April 10 general election.

Former National Assembly Speaker Chung Eui-hwa, chairman of the party’s standing advisory group, said at a standing advisory group meeting held at a restaurant in Yeouido that day, “The cause of this crushing defeat is the president’s lack of communication and the public judgment on our party’s incompetence.”

He added, “I think the late judgment and the president’s self-righteousness that emerged during the legislative conflict had a negative impact on the votes at the last minute.”

He emphasized, “We must win the presidential election three years from now. Many people who support us are very concerned about losing power,” and added, “The president must definitely change and our party must also become more competent.”

Regarding the future direction of settlement, orders continued to include a change in the president’s attitude and improvement in party-government relations.

Former Chairman Jeong asked President Yoon Seok-yeol, “Please open up the channels of communication with the staff of the President’s Office and those around you, create an atmosphere in which candid stories can be told beyond a free discussion, and bring a lot of wisdom so that the people do not worry.”

Regarding the party, he asked, “It should not be a party that only looks at the president. Please speak directly when necessary. Now, please do politics that really looks at the people.”

He went on to suggest, “We need to change into a party that can always communicate and cooperate with the opposition party, which occupies an absolute majority of seats,” and suggested, “Wouldn’t it be a good idea for the party leadership to encourage the president to meet with the opposition party leader as well?”

Standing advisor Yoo Jun-sang pointed out, “I hope that President Yoon will go back to his original intention when he took power two years ago and appeal more actively to the political philosophy he wants to pursue.”

Regarding President Yoon’s remarks at the Cabinet meeting the previous day, he said, “If you look at all the media reports, they consistently failed to sympathize with this (presidential message) and created the image of a lack of communication.” He added, “I wish we could communicate confidently in front of the people by holding press conferences at the right time.” “I hope so,” he said.

Standing advisor Yoo Heung-soo met with reporters after the meeting and said, “I think the direction of state administration is right, but the people do not like the method of executing it and the style of state administration. We need to change the style of government administration.”

At the closed meeting, it was reported that a remark was made emphasizing ‘unity’, saying, “The party should move toward unity, not tearing each other apart.” Regarding the next party leader, it is said that there was an opinion that “it should be someone who can integrate and encompass.”

There were also suggestions on the selection of a successor Prime Minister and Chief of Staff to the President.

Former Chairman Jeong said, “I hope the prime minister is an economic expert who can take good care of the people’s livelihood, and I hope he becomes a central figure who does not shy away from criticizing the president at any time. Please find someone who can be recognized by both the ruling and opposition parties.”

Advisor Yoo Heung-soo said, “I hope the chief of staff will be someone with excellent political sense. It would be better for someone with a background in politics to be able to give harsh words or advice to the president without hesitation.”

Regarding the reported appointment of ‘Prime Minister Park Young-sun and Chief of Staff Yang Jeong-cheol’, he said, “Such appointments are possible when a coalition government is assumed, but it is unthinkable to appoint a person who holds a position in the Democratic Party to such a key position.”

Some attendees are said to have commented on the efforts of former Emergency Response Committee Chairman Han Dong-hoon, who led the general election campaign, saying, “Good job.”

Jae-ok Yoon, floor leader and acting leader of the party, who presided over the meeting, said, “We will comprehensively analyze the reasons for the defeat through the general election white paper, etc.,” and added, “We will analyze and prepare countermeasures by referring to various opinions.”
