Taiwan is grappling with the aftermath of Typhoon Gaemi as rescue efforts intensify for a cargo ship and a tanker affected by the storm.
Off Taiwan’s southern coast, a Tanzania-flagged cargo ship, Fu Shun, sank near Kaohsiung with nine crew members aboard. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the Philippine-flagged MT Terra Nova capsized in Manila Bay while carrying nearly 1.5 million litres of industrial fuel. Sixteen crew members were rescued, but one remains missing.
Typhoon Gaemi, which landed on Taiwan’s east coast, has caused casualties and widespread damage. Three people have been reported dead, and hundreds have been injured on the island. In the Philippines, the storm contributed to fatalities and a significant oil spill stretching kilometres in Manila Bay.
The typhoon has disrupted transport and daily life across Taiwan, prompting cancellations of flights, military drills, and classes. It is forecasted to weaken as it traverses Taiwan’s mountainous terrain before reaching southeastern China’s Fujian province for a second landfall.
Authorities in Taiwan and the Philippines are coordinating rescue efforts amid challenging weather conditions. Precautionary measures remain in place as the region braces for further impacts from Typhoon Gaemi.
