Indian Labourer Strikes Fortune with US$95k Diamond Discovery

Raju Gound, an Indian labourer from Panna city in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, has experienced a dramatic change in fortune after unearthing a significant diamond in a local mine.

The discovered diamond, weighing 19.22 carats, is anticipated to fetch approximately 8 million rupees (US$95,570) in an upcoming government auction.

Gound, who has been leasing mines in Panna for over a decade, expressed his persistent hope of finding a valuable diamond among the region’s renowned diamond reserves.

Panna, known for its diamond-rich deposits, often sees individuals leasing inexpensive, shallow mines from the government to pursue these precious stones.

The National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) oversees mechanized diamond mining projects in Panna and leases shallow mines to private individuals and groups equipped with basic tools.

Anupam Singh, an official at the state government’s diamond office, highlighted the accessible leasing costs, typically ranging from 200-250 rupees for a specified period.

While more minor diamond discoveries are not uncommon, Singh noted the rarity of Gound’s find due to its considerable size, emphasizing the magnitude of his discovery.

Gound recounted the daily grind of manually searching for diamonds, particularly during the monsoon season when agricultural and construction work diminishes. This underscored his family’s reliance on such discoveries for income.

“After years of perseverance, I spotted a glint among the rocks, realizing it was a diamond,” Gound shared with BBC, describing the moment of discovery.

Following the evaluation and weighing at the government diamond office, Gound awaits the proceeds from the diamond’s sale at the government auction, deducting royalties and taxes.

With plans to settle his debts and improve his family’s living conditions, Gound intends to share the windfall with 19 relatives, highlighting his unwavering commitment to community and familial support.

As Gound prepares to return to the mines, he remains optimistic about future discoveries and considers the newfound opportunities ahead.
