A group of experts from Africa and Ukraine have called for urgent reforms within the United Nations (UN) international security systems in response to the escalating conflict following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The experts, representing organizations such as the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, the Democratic Institute Foundation (DIF), and the Ukrainian Association of South Africa (UAZA), gathered at the University of Ghana for a seminar titled “African Peace Mission and the Ukraine Peace Formula: Regional Security, Nuclear Safety, and Human Rights Perspectives”.
During the seminar, Professor Tim Murithi, head of the Peacebuilding Interventions Programme at the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation, emphasized the need for reforms within the UN Security Council (UNSC) due to the imbalance caused by the veto rights of its permanent members. He highlighted that these dynamics have allowed major powers to bypass international rules while claiming to uphold global governance.
The experts proposed activating Article 109 of the UN Charter to rebalance authority between the UN General Assembly (UNGA) and the UNSC, granting UNGA resolutions more weight to counterbalance UNSC veto powers.
The seminar, held in collaboration with Penplusbytes, a non-profit organization in Ghana, brought together academics, experts, students, and legal practitioners to discuss various topics related to global security challenges, including nuclear safety and the forced deportation of children.
The call for UN reforms aims to address ongoing geopolitical tensions and create a more equitable and effective global security framework.
