Data from Stocklytics.com highlights a dire situation: Germany’s skilled workforce is anticipated to plummet by 8.3 million by 2040, representing a staggering 23.3 million decline over the next twenty years.
This trend underscores a mounting crisis for Central Europe’s industrial landscape, exacerbated by an ageing population, low birth rates, and escalating demand for highly specialized professionals.
A recent report from the German Economic Institute identifies the scarcity of skilled workers as the second-largest business risk for German companies.
By 2025, the region will face a tightening labour market with soaring job vacancy rates and historically low unemployment levels.
As the workforce ages and retirements increase, the situation will only deteriorate, posing profound challenges across various sectors.
Specifically, Germany anticipates a drop of 1.6 million skilled workers between 2020 and 2025, followed by an additional 4.3 million deficit by 2035. By 2040, the country is projected to have only 23.3 million skilled workers—a 26% decline from 2020—resulting in a total workforce reduction of 5.5 million despite an increase in highly educated employees.
