This decisive action addresses liabilities left by the previous operator and marks a major step towards restoring worker confidence and operational stability at the site. The payment covers accumulated salaries, leave entitlements, and related obligations predating Heath Goldfields’ acquisition.
Settlement of these arrears was a mandatory condition imposed by the Government of Ghana for granting the mining leases to Heath Goldfields. The unresolved liabilities had persisted since the termination of the prior leaseholder’s tenure, creating prolonged uncertainty and financial hardship for the mine’s workforce. Heath Goldfields’ intervention directly tackles this legacy issue.
Patrick Appiah Mensah, Managing Director of Heath Goldfields, outlined the company’s commitment. According to company statements, Mensah reaffirmed that “Our commitment to our people is at the heart of our values,” acknowledging the debts originated before their tenure but stating, “we undertook to settle them in full following the successful award of the mining lease.” The payment is central to the company’s strategy for repositioning the mine.
Beyond the GH₵80 million payment, Heath Goldfields has initiated a broader stakeholder engagement and reconciliation process. This effort aims to resolve other remaining entitlements, including unpaid provident fund contributions, severance packages, and end-of-service benefits for affected workers. The goal is to build a foundation of trust and social stability essential for future operations.
Industry analysts view this settlement as a significant brand statement by Heath Goldfields. It signals the company’s intent to position itself as a credible and values-driven partner within Ghana’s mining sector, emphasizing ethical leadership and transparent stakeholder relations. The move is expected to enhance labour harmony as operations gradually resume.
The clearance of arrears is anticipated to boost investor confidence in the mine’s revival under its new management. Coupled with the ongoing stakeholder reconciliation, it aims to catalyse sustainable value creation for the local communities surrounding the mine and contribute positively to the national economy. Operations continue a phased reopening plan.
