The initiative, which spans 12 locations nationwide, includes symbolic and community-driven events in Tema, Sakumono, Dodowa, Adenta, Madina, Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale, Esiama, Tarkwa, Takoradi, and Kasoa. Beneficiaries include schools, churches, and hospitals, with over 20 institutions participating.
Speaking at a tree planting ceremony at the Light Academy in Adenta, Executive Director and Regional Head of Consumer Banking for Ecobank Ghana and Anglophone West Africa, Mr. Tara Squire, said the project reflects the bank’s long-term focus on environmental protection, financial inclusion, and carbon reduction.
“Sustainability is at the core of Ecobank’s vision,” he stated. “We are taking bold steps to reduce the carbon footprints of our operations while supporting broader societal goals such as financial literacy and inclusion.”
Mr. Squire noted that Ecobank’s internal sustainability framework monitors energy consumption, office waste, paper use, and vehicle emissions. He added that the bank’s digital banking drive, which reduces paper usage and expands access to financial services in underserved areas, reinforces its green strategy.
The campaign forms part of a broader agenda for World Environment Month, during which Ecobank also participated in the national World Environment Day event at Kwabenya Community SHS on June 5 and joined a commemorative tree planting event with the Diplomatic Corps at Achimota Forest on June 20.
Further cementing its environmental efforts, Ecobank has adopted two hectares of degraded land within the Chipa Forest Reserve near Dodowa for reforestation. Groundwork is expected to begin in the coming days.
District Manager at the Greater Accra Regional Forestry Office, Madam Dorcas Asiamah, commended Ecobank for aligning with Ghana’s “Tree for Life” Reforestation Initiative, which aims to plant 30 million trees nationwide in 2025.
“Tree planting is very important, and Ecobank Ghana’s decision to focus on schools is laudable,” she said. “It instills the culture and spirit of environmental stewardship in children and youth.”
Madam Asiamah also highlighted the ecological and economic value of trees—from carbon sequestration and water purification to job creation and climate regulation. She encouraged citizens to visit Forestry Commission offices to collect free seedlings and contribute to national reforestation.
Headmistress of Light Academy, Mrs. Shirley-Ann Boateng, urged students to view the event as a call to lifelong environmental responsibility. “Let this be the beginning of a lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship,” she said.
As climate change intensifies across the region, Ecobank’s initiative stands as both a symbolic and practical response, uniting corporate leadership with community action. By involving youth and public institutions, the bank aims to foster a sustainable culture that endures beyond annual observances.
