Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren says his side are now a much better team ahead of their third-place clash with South Africa at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ghana will be aiming to end the tournament on a high after suffering a painful 4-2 defeat on penalties to host nation Morocco in the semifinals on Tuesday night.

The Black Queens began their WAFCON campaign with a 2-0 loss to defending champions South Africa in Group C, but Björkegren believes his team is a better side now.

“I think we are already a better team now than we were a few weeks ago,” he said.

“That first game against South Africa was quite even — a 50-50 game. They scored, we didn’t.

“But I always knew this team needed time to grow into the tournament. We’ve been playing better and better since then, and that’s one of our biggest strengths.”

Ghana will face South Africa again on Friday, July 25, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, hoping to claim the bronze medal.
