President Nana Akufo-Addo has criticised executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly inciting their supporters to engage in acts of violence and vandalism after the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the December 7 general elections.

Speaking at the Bicentenary Anniversary of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Sunday, December 22, 2024, President Akufo-Addo expressed disappointment over the post-election disturbances and called on political leaders to promote peace and stability.

“It is with deep concern that I acknowledge the unfortunate incidents of post-election hooliganism, vandalism, and violence that followed. Incidents which threaten to tarnish the beauty of our democratic exercise. Such acts were completely unnecessary and were wholly unacceptable. They must never reoccur,” he stated.

The President further alleged that the violent episodes were linked to some executives and sympathisers of the NDC, a situation he described as detrimental to Ghana’s democratic reputation.

“Regrettably, these unfortunate disturbances appear to involve some executives and sympathisers of the victorious party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). As a nation, we must be resolute in our commitment to safeguarding peace, stability, and democratic values,” he added.

The aftermath of the election saw attacks on several government agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Tema Oil Refinery, etc. These incidents have drawn widespread condemnation from various quarters.

President Akufo-Addo also commended the Electoral Commission for conducting what he described as a free, fair, and transparent election. He urged stakeholders to place the country’s democratic principles above partisan interests.

As tensions remain high, the President called on all Ghanaians to eschew violence and work together to preserve the nation’s peace and stability.
