Dr. Benjamin K.D. Asante, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas Company, has called upon African leaders to capitalize on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict by expanding gas exports to Europe.
Speaking at a public lecture themed “Gas Commercialization: Fostering a Sustainable Petroleum Economy, Opportunities and Setbacks” at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Dr. Asante lamented Africa’s underutilization of its gas production capabilities and urged for enhanced distribution efforts.
“Africa, contributing 10-15% of global gas production but utilizing only 5-6% locally, stands poised to benefit from Europe’s need for alternative gas sources following Russia’s supply cuts,” he stated on July 25th, instilling a sense of hope and optimism in the audience.
Dr. Asante highlighted West Africa’s geographical advantage, proposed pipeline routes, and emphasized the region’s potential to fill the gas supply gap in Europe.
“The impact of the Russia-Ukraine war and Europe’s move towards carbon neutrality presents a unique opportunity for Africa to establish itself as a reliable gas supplier,” he asserted, underlining the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate action.
Acknowledging challenges such as infrastructure deficiencies and tax regimes, Dr. Asante underscored the importance of addressing these issues to facilitate sustainable gas supply initiatives.
“Africa must develop robust handling and transportation infrastructure and create conducive fiscal environments to attract necessary investments,” he recommended.
Dr. Asante also stressed the importance of capacity building in the gas and energy sectors, advocating for collaboration between academia and industry to nurture local talent and expertise.
As Africa prepares to navigate the evolving global energy landscape, Dr. Asante’s call for strategic investments and regulatory frameworks resonates as a pivotal step towards maximizing the continent’s gas export potential.
