China on Thursday urged the Group of Seven (G7) to stop using “small circle” rules to undermine the international trade order after the bloc said it aimed to reduce dependence on Chinese rare earths and critical minerals.

Speaking at a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China’s position on maintaining the stability and security of global supply chains for critical minerals had not changed.

The comments came after a statement issued at the G7 summit said member countries would work to reduce their reliance on China for rare earths and other critical minerals.

Lin said all parties had a responsibility to play a constructive role in safeguarding those supply chains. He added that China’s efforts to standardize and improve its export control system were in line with international practices and aimed at better maintaining world peace and regional stability, as well as fulfilling non-proliferation obligations.
