Why quality has not benefited Ghana and Africa, and the remedy

1. Quality Has Been Treated as Inspection, Not Transformation Across Ghana and Africa, quality is often equated with audits, certificates, compliance forms, inspections, and checklists. These are important, but Deming cautioned that they are not quality: “Quality must be built into the product; it cannot be inspected in.” (Deming, 1986) African institutions frequently attempt to “inspect quality into the system” instead of designing quality into the system. As a result, defects, errors, and inefficiencies persist—only discovered after damage has already occurred. Inspection-driven quality is reactive, not transformative.
