A court in Ghana’s Ashanti Region has remanded 36 people into police custody after a major drug operation in Asante Mampong on May 23 targeting two known narcotics hotspots.

The Nsuta Circuit Court issued the remand order on Monday following a hearing at which prosecutor Peter Kantoreje told presiding judge Simon Nketsia Gaagah that investigations into the alleged offences were still ongoing. No pleas were taken from any of the suspects. The case has been adjourned to June 2, 2026.

Officers from the Asante Mampong Police Command carried out simultaneous raids at Akyeremade and Tunsuom, two areas the police described as established drug activity centres within the municipality. The suspects range in age from 17 to 37.

At Akyeremade, police said several suspects attempted to flee after allegedly dropping substances believed to be Indian hemp upon seeing officers arrive. They were pursued and arrested. At Tunsuom, a separate group of suspects was allegedly found smoking marijuana at a known drug gathering spot before being apprehended.

Items retrieved during the operation included scissors, cigarette and marijuana lighters, bundles of wrappers believed to be used for packaging illegal substances, cross-body bags and GH¢5,679 in cash.

Police said the raids form part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on substance abuse and the illegal drug trade within the municipality.
