A bold new chapter in Ghanaian football was written in Accra last Monday as legendary South Korean coach, Lim Hung-se, officially launched the West Africa Mission Football Academy (WAMFA), an ambitious project designed not only to unearth Ghana’s next generation of stars but to build a club capable of climbing to the very summit of the domestic game.
In partnership with the Christian missionary organisation, West Africa Mission, Coach Lim has planted the seeds of what could become one of the most structured and visionary football projects in the country,  complete with a long-term plan to establish Hoolala FC and propel it from the third tier of Ghana’s football pyramid to the Premier League.

The launch ceremony, held at the Mission International School at Community 25, marked more than the unveiling of an academy. It signalled the start of a football revolution powered by global expertise, missionary conviction and a clearly defined pathway to elite competition.
Coach Lim, one of South Korea’s most respected football developers, arrives with over 40 years of experience across South Korea, South Africa and South Sudan.
He has been instrumental in shaping some of the biggest names in Korean football, including current senior national team coach, Hong Myung-bo, Kim Joo-sung, Women’s National Team coach Shin Sang-woo, and World Cup star, Ha Seok-ju.
From Academy to Premier League
The academy, a dream nurtured over two years by Korean missionaries, Rev. David Choi and his father, Rev. John Choi, sits at the heart of a broader footballing blueprint.
Beyond talent identification and development, the project includes the formation of Hoolala FC, a club set to begin in Division Two, with a clearly stated ambition to rise through Division One and ultimately compete in the Ghana Premier League.
It is a plan as audacious as it is methodical.

Among the key figures steering the project is Capt. Andy Sam (retd), former CEO of four-time Ghana champions AshantiGold, who serves as Deputy CEO of WAMFA. Capt. Sam brings formidable academy credentials, having previously served as country director at Aspire Football Dreams, where he oversaw the scouting of over 200,000 young players across Ghana to recruit the finest talents for the world-renowned Aspire Academy in Qatar.
That experience, combined with Coach Lim’s global pedigree and partnership with the Ghana Football Association and some respected officials within the Ghanaian football ecosystem, gives WAMFA immediate credibility.
Laying foundation
In a symbolic moment at last Monday’s ceremony, Rev. David Choi, Rev. John Choi and Coach Lim jointly cut the sod for the construction of a modern sports complex.
The project will include natural grass pitches, AstroTurf facilities, a futsal (six-a-side) arena and a residential complex, infrastructure designed to support a structured, systematic development model for players aged 10 and above.

The initiative also enjoys backing fromSouth Korea’s Hoolala chicken franchise, known for supporting youth initiatives across Africa, including in Tanzania and South Sudan.
Ghana’s Ambassador to South Korea, Kojo Choi — the youngest son of Rev. John Choi — delivered a solidarity message, expressing delight that the long-envisioned project had finally taken off.
He noted that Coach Lim’s extensive experience in Korea and across Africa would prove invaluable in shaping Ghana’s next generation of footballers.
Building warriors and leaders
For Coach Lim, however, this is about more than football.
“Standing here in Ghana, the sanctuary and heart of African football, is a profound honour,” he said. “I have seen the future of world football in the eyes of Ghanaian children playing in empty lots. My mission, alongside WAMFA and Hoolala FC, is to turn that raw talent into world-class excellence.”
The veteran trainer, who has produced over 11 South Korean national team players, made clear that the academy’s vision extends beyond technical ability.

“The youth trained here will stand at the pinnacle of the world stage,” he added. “We will groom warriors on the pitch and honest, disciplined leaders off it.”
The project also drew endorsement from Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, who delivered a video message welcoming the initiative and praising its commitment to structured talent development and broader career pathways for young Ghanaians.
