Ghana’s future relies on every citizen’s contribution — President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called on all Ghanaians to actively participate in the country’s development, emphasising that while leadership carries accountability, nation-building depends on the daily efforts of millions of citizens. He made the remarks during the 2026 State of the Nation Address on February 27.

“Leadership carries the weight of final accountability, but citizens have a duty to bring their full energy, skills, and patriotism to advance the country. That is how nations are built. That is how economies grow. No policy can substitute for civic duty,” he stated.

“While the ball may stop with me, the work of nation-building goes beyond that, through the labour, enterprise, and civic spirit of millions of Ghanaians whose daily efforts give policy life,” the President added.

President Mahama stressed that Ghana should not be defined solely by its challenges. “We are sometimes tempted to judge our nation only by our failures and difficulties. But the country is defined by the choices made in response to those difficulties,” he said.

Highlighting Ghana’s history of resilience, he noted that citizens have consistently chosen steadiness over despair, cooperation over division, and purpose over cynicism. Quoting an African proverb, he said: “However long the night is, the dawn will break. The dawn is breaking for Ghana.”

Mahama emphasised that the current moment demands not just endurance but decisive action, asserting that the country’s renewal depends on strong institutions, a resilient economy, and a culture of responsibility passed to future generations.

“The Republic belongs equally to the farmer, the trader, the teacher, the nurse, the artisan, the entrepreneur, the parliamentarian, the young citizen, and the elderly retired personnel. Each of these people has a stake in our nation, and each one has a duty,” he said.

Reflecting on Ghana’s past trials, he assured citizens that the country will not surrender to present challenges. “With gratitude for how far we have come and resolve for the work ahead, I say the state of our nation is resilient, the state of our nation is renewing, and our nation is firmly in the hands of its people. Our nation is on the brink of takeoff. And so, ladies and gentlemen, passengers, fasten your seat belts,” he concluded.
