0 Twenty-two out of 50 fishermen who were left stranded at sea after a violent attack by heavily armed men have been safely brought back to shore, as efforts continue to rescue others still waiting offshore.
The fishermen were rescued from two separate boats after colleagues towed them back to land. Their outboard motors had reportedly been taken during the raid, leaving them unable to move on their own.
Videos from the landing site showed scenes of relief and celebration as the rescued men arrived. Family members, friends, and community members cheered and rushed to welcome them. They poured white powder over the fishermen in a traditional show of joy and thanksgiving.
Armed men attacked the fishermen at sea near Senya Beraku in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region, firing multiple warning shots, holding victims at gunpoint and making away with seven outboard motors, generators and other valuables on Wednesday, February 25.
The incident occurred during a night fishing expedition, leaving more than 50 fishermen stranded offshore after their equipment was seized.
The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh, explained that four canoes had been sent to assist the affected fishermen.
In a coordinated effort, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) also dispatched a rescue team of navy and air force soldiers to assist the victims
