0 The Government has approved the payment of long-standing gratuity arrears to retired military personnel under Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.
In a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at General Headquarters, Burma Camp, the Ghana Armed Forces said the payments will begin this week.
The statement said, “Government has approved and will commence payment of gratuity arrears for all retired military personnel under the implementation of Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.”
The issue had remained unresolved for five years. According to the release, when the current Military High Command assumed office, it began discussions with the Ministries of Finance and Defence to address what it described as a “5-year long-standing impasse over the gratuity formula under CI 129.”
Those consultations have now produced what the Armed Forces called “a clear two-year phased implementation roadmap.”
Under the approved plan, all personnel who retired from November 2020 will receive arrears calculated using the new gratuity formula. Payments will be made in four instalments from February 2026 to December 2027.
“The first tranche will be released by close of business on Friday, February 27,” the statement said.
In total, 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers are expected to benefit from the arrangement.
The Armed Forces also confirmed that future retirements will no longer face similar delays. “Consequently, all future retirements will be processed fully in line with CI 129,” the statement noted.
The Military High Command said the decision brings finality to the matter, which has been pending since 2020.
It added that the move “ensures that affected personnel and all others who will retire subsequently receive their full entitlements at the correct rate.”
The High Command also expressed gratitude to the Government for its role in resolving the issue.
