The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has presented assorted food items to the Ghana Prisons Service to support inmates across the country during the holy month of Ramadan.

According to a post shared on Facebook by the Ministry, the donation, aimed particularly at assisting Muslim inmates observing the fasting period, comprised bags of sugar, gallons of cooking oil, cartons of tomato paste, bags of rice, quantities of milk and other essential food supplies.

The items will be distributed to major prison facilities nationwide to enhance feeding arrangements during the sacred month.

Presenting the items, Mr Muntaka expressed appreciation to the Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners, Ibrahim Mahama, for his continued support to the Service.

He noted that the gesture reflected compassion and solidarity with inmates, many of whom are working towards rehabilitation and eventual reintegration into society.

The Minister stressed that Ramadan is a period marked by reflection, sacrifice and spiritual renewal, and emphasised the need to ensure that inmates observing the fast are adequately supported.

He commended persons in custody for their resilience and reiterated the Government’s commitment to improving welfare and living conditions within correctional facilities.

According to Mr Muntaka, supporting inmates during important religious observances forms part of broader efforts to promote humane treatment and uphold dignity within the prison system.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Service, the Deputy Director-General of Prisons in charge of Operations, Francis Omane Addo, thanked the Minister for his consistent advocacy and engagement on matters affecting the Service. He also expressed gratitude to Mr Mahama for his sustained assistance.

Dr Omane Addo assured that the donated supplies would be put to good use and distributed appropriately across designated prison facilities to ensure that inmates benefit fully from the intervention.
