Duraplast Ghana Ltd. has responded to a request by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, by donating 20 waste bins to support sanitation efforts in the metropolis and help reduce littering in public spaces.
The company’s Executive Director, Ms Mireille Hitti, accepted the request on Tuesday when the Mayor, accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South Constituency, Ernest Adomako, paid a working visit to the company.
The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration on local development priorities and explore opportunities for job creation.
The engagement forms part of a broader effort by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to partner with businesses in addressing urban management challenges and creating economic opportunities for residents.
Speaking during the meeting, Mayor Allotey said the Assembly would be responsible for collecting waste from the bins, which will be installed at selected locations across the city to improve sanitation and curb indiscriminate dumping.
He noted that beyond the initial 20 bins, the Assembly is considering the placement of additional bins at strategic points to expand access to proper waste disposal and further enhance cleanliness across the metropolis.
The Mayor also appealed to residents and visitors to avoid dumping refuse into drains and littering public spaces, warning that such practices contribute to clogged gutters, environmental degradation, and unhealthy living conditions.
He cautioned that individuals who flout sanitation regulations would be sanctioned in line with the Assembly’s by-laws, adding that enforcement would go hand in hand with sustained public education on responsible waste disposal.
For her part, Ms Hitti said the donation reflects Duraplast Ghana Ltd.’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and practical investments that deliver improved sanitation outcomes.
She added that the company considers effective waste management a shared responsibility and remains ready to support initiatives that result in visible improvements in community hygiene.
Ms Hitti further assured that she would join the Mayor and his team during the installation of the bins across the city, describing the exercise as a collaborative effort to promote proper waste disposal and foster public ownership of a cleaner environment.
