0 The Government of Ghana has intensified efforts to secure justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, the Ghanaian student who tragically lost his life under unusual circumstances while studying in the Republic of Latvia.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 19 February, a delegation led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, recently travelled to Latvia to engage directly with Latvian authorities on the matter.
The delegation comprised forensic experts, a pathologist, legal advisers, the Ghanaian Ambassador, and consular officers from the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin. The family of the deceased — represented by Nana Agyei’s mother and aunt — was actively involved in the discussions.
Meetings were held with senior Latvian officials, including the Foreign Minister, the Minister for the Interior, police chiefs, state prosecutors, and investigators assigned to the case.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Latvian authorities confirmed that the investigation into Nana Agyei’s death is ongoing and is now being directly supervised by the Latvian Interior Ministry.
Fresh investigators have been appointed to guarantee a credible and thorough inquiry, reflecting the high level of interest and concern from the government of Ghana.
The Latvian side welcomed further submissions of relevant information to aid the investigative process. Acting on this, and under the guidance of the Ghanaian delegation, the mother of the deceased submitted a formal statement to the appropriate authorities as part of the official record.
The delegation also indicated that additional submissions would follow.
In response to Ghanaian queries, Latvian officials affirmed that the final investigative report would be made available to Nana Agyei’s family, without objection.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasised that the government of Ghana remains fully committed to truth, transparency, and justice.
Officials will maintain regular engagement with Latvian authorities and continue to use all appropriate diplomatic and legal channels to ensure due process is observed and justice is served. Ghanaian officials will also sustain close contact with the bereaved family, providing regular updates to both the family and the public.
The Ministry urged citizens to refrain from speculation, which could undermine ongoing investigations.
“The Government of Ghana remains absolutely committed to safeguarding the welfare and rights of all Ghanaians, both at home and abroad,” the Ministry concluded.
