The Member of Parliament for Tano North Constituency in the Ahafo Region, Gideon Boako, has secured funding for the reconstruction of the decades-old Yamfo Market, a move expected to transform trading activities and significantly improve sanitation, safety and general well-being in the area.

The market, which has served the community for several decades, is currently in a deplorable state. Traders and buyers endure muddy grounds during the rainy season and dusty conditions in the dry season.

Weak wooden structures and leaking roofs have exposed occupants to harsh weather conditions, posing risks of respiratory infections from dust and possible structural collapse. Under the redevelopment plan, the existing structure will be completely revamped.

The roof will be ripped off, wooden structures dismantled, and stalls broken down to pave the way for the construction of a modern market facility designed to meet improved health, safety, and commercial standards.

Dr. Boako announced the development during a courtesy call on traditional rulers, market leaders, traders, and buyers on Thursday, February 12.

He stated that the project would restore dignity to traders and address the numerous health concerns associated with poor sanitary conditions in the market.

The redevelopment is expected to provide proper drainage, durable roofing, improved ventilation and safer trading spaces; measures that will reduce exposure to disease, prevent accidents, and create a more humane and decent environment for women and elderly traders who dominate the market space.

Improved infrastructure will also enhance fire safety and protect goods from damage.

The MP urged chiefs, assembly members and market leaders to ensure that current occupants of the market are given priority in the allocation of new stalls before any new traders are admitted after completion.

He further outlined plans to temporarily relocate traders to an alternative site to allow construction works to proceed smoothly until the facility is completed and handed over.

The Paramount Queen Mother of the Yamfo Traditional Council, Nana Darkowaa Ampem Kyerewaa II, described the intervention as a “dream come true” and commended the MP for responding to a long-standing need of the community.

Some traders, including Yaa Konadu, expressed excitement about the project, noting that the persistent muddy conditions will soon become a thing of the past.

The reconstruction is expected to enhance commercial activity while promoting public health, safety, and human dignity in Yamfo and its surrounding communities.
