Ahanta West MCE confirms roll-out of 24-hour ecoonomy market in Agona Nkwanta

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ahanta West, Ing. Ebenezer Aidoo, has confirmed that the long-awaited 24-hour economy market will soon be established in Agona Nkwanta.

Speaking on Joy News AM on Tuesday, February 11, he said preparations for the project are well underway, with significant progress made in laying the groundwork.

Mr Aidoo explained that when he assumed office, one of the major challenges was the lack of proper records and reliable data.

“It was challenging in the initial stages, but we have been able to set up the foundation because we came to meet an assembly where data was even a problem,” he said.

He added that lands, municipal properties and other records are now properly documented and secured — a crucial step, he noted, for long-term development.

The MCE also highlighted measures taken to improve sanitation and reduce congestion at the main market.

“We carried out one of the most massive clean-up exercises. We have organised shop owners so that pavements and roads are clear. This has eased congestion, and we will maintain this standard,” he said.

He noted that the town’s drainage system has been rehabilitated, with old slabs replaced and gutters cleared to ease future maintenance.

According to Mr Aidoo, the next phase was to end street trading entirely.

“We have completed that phase, and the good news is that, under good governance, the 24-hour economy market is coming,” he said.

On the relocation of traders, he indicated that those currently occupying sheds and containers at the old market would be moved to Kokompe to pave the way for the new facility.

“If the 24-hour economy market is coming, the best place for it is the old market. We are going to do an evacuation to prepare the site,” he confirmed.

Mr Aidoo said stakeholders in the community have welcomed the project.

“The good news again is that the stakeholders themselves are also very happy that we are going to have a befitting market for Agona Nkwanta, which they believe will boost commerce and improve the overall standard of trading in the municipality.”

The project is expected to take between 18 months and two years to complete and will provide a modern, well-equipped market for the people of Agona Nkwanta.
