A visibly frustrated Abdul Karim Zito was left counting the cost of yet another slip-up in the title chase after Kotoko slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Heart of Lions.

The Porcupine Warriors conceded two first-half goals before Samba O’Neil’s penalty restored hope at the Kpando Stadium.

However, any hope of a comeback was quickly dismissed when Michael Ephson restored Lions’ two-goal advantage with 18 minutes remaining.

“I missed it (the opportunity to close the gap on league leaders Medeama S.C). Seriously, I missed it. That is why I told you that I was not expecting this result because, to be honest with you, in terms of preparation, we prepared very well.”

A win for Kotoko would have narrowed the gap on the league leaders Medeama S.C, who lost to Nations F.C, to 5 points.

However, Zito’s side and fellow title hopefuls Aduana F.C. and Accra Hearts of Oak all dropped points on Sunday.

Aduana were held to a goalless draw by former champions F.C. Samartex, while Hearts also shared the spoils with Bechem United at home.

As a result, Bibiani Gold Stars’ 1-0 win over Swedru All Blacks has moved them to second place with 37 points, 7 behind Medeama.

Kotoko’s next league match is at home to Hearts of Oak on February 15th, while Medeama hosts Aduana in Tarkwa on the same day.
