The Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Education have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable the Ghana Prisons Service to produce sanitary pads, school uniforms and furniture for basic and secondary schools across the country.

Under the agreement, the Ghana Prisons Service will be allocated a minimum 30 per cent concession in the production and supply of school furniture, while at least 25 per cent of government’s 2025 Free Sanitary Pads Initiative will be implemented through the Service.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister for the Interior, Mr. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, said the initiative is aimed at ensuring value for money and enhancing transparency in public procurement by anchoring production within state-owned institutions.

He noted that beyond cost efficiency, the programme will equip inmates with practical and employable skills, improving their chances of reintegration into society after serving their sentences.

She said the initiative is a “game changer” that will help break the cycle of reoffending by providing inmates with sustainable vocational skills.
