0 The Forestry Commission of Ghana has condemned in no uncertain terms the vandalism and burning of its newly constructed timber checkpoint staff accommodation at Babatokuma, near Kintampo in the Bono East Region.
It noted that on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., an irate mob attacked personnel on duty at the facility, assaulted them, and forcibly entered the premises.
The attackers vandalised and set fire to the structure, destroying the accommodation entirely.
Preliminary information indicates the mob acted on the belief that the Commission’s monitoring operations threatened their timber business interests, particularly efforts to curb illegal transportation of timber products across Ghana’s borders.
Affected personnel are receiving medical care at the Kintampo Government Hospital.
The matter has been formally reported to the Kintampo Divisional Police Command.
The Commission is collaborating with security agencies to identify and prosecute perpetrators, who were captured on video.
The Forestry Commission views this attack as an affront to State authority and a deliberate attempt to undermine national efforts to safeguard forest resources.
The Commission notes with concern a troubling pattern of impunity, citing past violent attacks on its personnel and offices.
The Commission appeals to all well-meaning Ghanaians, security agencies, traditional authorities, the media, and civil society organisations to support efforts to address growing lawlessness in the forestry sector.
Despite this incident, the Forestry Commission reaffirms its commitment to protect, develop, and sustainably manage Ghana’s forest and wildlife resources for present and future generations.
