The Ministry of the Interior has issued a six-week ultimatum to individuals in possession of unregistered firearms, directing them to voluntarily surrender their weapons or face severe sanctions.

The nationwide exercise, which forms part of a broader crackdown on gun violence, will run from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026. It aims to curb the proliferation of illicit arms and address rising gun-related incidents across the country.

The initiative offers a safe window for citizens to hand over unregistered or illegally held firearms without fear of prosecution.

Launching the Gun Amnesty Initiative, Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak warned that anyone found with illicit weapons after the deadline will be subjected to stringent punishment. He stressed that the effort is essential to creating a safer and more secure environment for all Ghanaians.

The Minister also announced a temporary ban on the use of firearms during traditional festivities within the amnesty period, a measure intended to curb celebratory gunfire, prevent injuries, and save lives in communities nationwide.
