The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for immediate government action to improve safety on the Volta Lake following a tragic boat accident near Kete Krachi that claimed 15 lives on Saturday, October 11, 2025.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Caucus is urging the government to prioritise the Volta Lake Transport Limited project, which was secured with a $150 million facility from the Korean Exim Bank in 2020.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe demand that the current government treat this as a matter of national priority and urgently follow up to ensure these funds are disbursed for the immediate execution of this vital project,\u201d the Caucus requested in a press statement in Accra. <\/p>\n

The statement, by Mr. Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Ranking Member of the Committee on Roads and Transportation, on Tuesday, cautioned against delaying in ensuring the safety of people using the lake for \u201ctheir daily lives\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cAny further delays would represent a profound failure of the government\u2019s duty to safeguard about two million Ghanaians who rely on the Volta Lake for their daily lives,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n

The statement also requested that the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) intensify its regulatory oversight of inland water transport on the Volta Lake, including the strict registration of vessels and enforcement of loading regulations to prevent overloading.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Volta Lake is a critical national asset, and we owe it to the memories of those we have lost and to the millions who continue to use the lake in their daily lives to take these urgent steps to ensure inland water transport safety for the Ghanaian people,\u201d he emphasised. <\/p>\n

The Caucus further called for decisive action to prevent further loss of lives on the Volta Lake, which has been exacerbated by poor safety measures.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Caucus noted that with a comprehensive feasibility study already completed by Vision Consult, the Minority believes that the project can transform the Volta Lake into a safe and efficient transport corridor integrated into a nationwide multimodal transport system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
