The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Ministry of Transport to immediately engage the Management and Workers\u2019 Union of the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) to agree on a payment plan for 12 months of outstanding salaries, as well as subsequent payments.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued on Wednesday, October 1, the Commission said: \u201cThe Ministry of Transport should engage Management and the Workers\u2019 Union of Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) in order to come up with a payment plan for the 12 months outstanding salaries as well as payment of subsequent salaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

The directive follows a strike notice issued by the Railway Workers\u2019 Union, effective September 30, 2025, over unpaid wages and growing concerns about job security.<\/p>\n

The NLC noted that GRCL workers have not received salaries for a year, stressing that as the sole shareholder, the government must take responsibility for the company\u2019s liabilities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the GRCL cannot pay its workers, then it is the responsibility of the Government as the sole shareholder to assume that liability,\u201d the Commission stated.<\/p>\n

The Commission warned that failure to resolve the arrears could worsen the situation:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the outstanding salaries are not paid, the salary arrears would continue to accumulate, which would make things very difficult for the parties.\u201d<\/p>\n
