Prof Baffour Agyeman-Duah, former UN Senior Government Advisor, says President John Mahama\u2019s bold address at the 80th UN General Assembly revived the spirit of Nkrumah-era African leadership.<\/p>\n

He told Joy News on September 29 that he was struck by the courage and depth of the speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the first time in a very long time that I\u2019ve heard an African leader at the UN taking on critical issues in such a bold way. It reminded me of Kwame Nkrumah days, the early post-independence era\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He recalled how Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, and others once stood at the UN to demand Africa\u2019s place on the global stage. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard the President\u2019s speech, it reminded me\u2026 we have so many challenges that our leaders tend to kind of either be timid \u2026 or because our hands are in their mouth\u2026 and it\u2019s gone for so long,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prof Agyeman-Duah praised President Mahama\u2019s direct style. <\/p>\n

He singled out a metaphor Mahama used: \u201cIf that bird cracks like a duck and looks like a duck and walks like one, please, let\u2019s say it\u2019s a duck.\u201d <\/p>\n

He said that line \u201creally impressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Mahama tackled thorny topics: the treatment of African migrants, the exploitative role of international financial agencies, and the need for fairness in global systems. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you tackle the issue of immigration, the way the western countries are treating Africans\u2026 the way the international financial agencies are simply exploiting us and many others that he raised\u2026 for me, it was the boldest speech I\u2019ve heard from an African leader in a very, very long time, and I was very pleased with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his UN address, Mahama argued that the world must wake up to Africa\u2019s shifting power. <\/p>\n

He emphasised that by 2050, over 25 per cent of the world\u2019s population will be African, and one-third of youth will live on the continent. He declared, \u201cThe future is African.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The President also challenged outdated global institutions. <\/p>\n

President Mahama said the UN Charter is \u201coutdated when it comes to representation\u201d, calling for permanent African seats on the Security Council and mechanisms to challenge veto power.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mahama further pressed that the global financial architecture is skewed against Africa and demanded a \u201creset\u201d of multilateral systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prof Agyeman-Duah\u2019s praise places Mahama\u2019s UN address as a defining moment. <\/p>\n

He sees it as a return to bold African diplomacy and a signal that Ghana intends to lead a continent pressing for justice and equity on the world stage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
