Russia\u2019s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov says his country has no intention of attacking EU or Nato member states but warned of a \u201cdecisive response\u201d to any \u201caggression\u201d directed towards Moscow.<\/p>\n

In a wide-ranging speech delivered at the UN General Assembly on Saturday, Lavrov said threats against Russia by Western countries were becoming \u201cincreasingly common\u201d.<\/p>\n

He also took aim at Israel, saying that while Russia condemned the 7 October 2023 attacks by Hamas, there was \u201cno justification\u201d for the \u201cbrutal killings\u201d of Palestinians in Gaza, or for plans to annex the West Bank.<\/p>\n

Israel has previously said its Gaza operation is necessary to defeat Hamas.<\/p>\n

At least 65,926 people have been killed by Israeli strikes, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, while about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage in the 7 October attacks.<\/p>\n

He decried Israeli aggression towards other countries in the Middle East which threatened to \u201cblow up\u201d the region.<\/p>\n

Israel has used its mission to eliminate Hamas in order to justify air strikes on other Middle Eastern countries,\u00a0including Qatar.<\/p>\n

On Iran, Lavrov accused Western powers of sabotaging diplomacy after\u00a0a last-minute bid led by Russia and China to delay sanctions being reimposed failed\u00a0on Friday. The Russian foreign minister said the move was \u201cillegal\u201d.<\/p>\n

The sanctions came into force at 00:00 GMT on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Speaking about tensions in Europe, Lavrov said: \u201cThreats of force against Russia, accused of practically planning an attack on the North Atlantic Alliance [Nato] and the European Union, are becoming increasingly common. President Putin has repeatedly debunked such provocations.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia has never had and does not have such intentions, but any aggression against my country will be met with a decisive response.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moscow has denied responsibility after\u00a0Denmark said drones were flown over its airports.\u00a0Denmark itself has said the incidents appeared to be the work of a \u201cprofessional actor\u201d but that there was no evidence of Russian involvement.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0Estonia has accused Russia of violating its airspace\u00a0with warplanes, while a\u00a0Nato air defence mission was recently carried out over Poland\u00a0as part of an allied response to Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump has gone as far as to say that Nato nations should shoot down Russian planes in their airspace, while Nato itself has warned it would use \u201call necessary military and non-military tools\u201d to defend itself following the recent military incursions.<\/p>\n

Trump has also appeared to shift his position on Russia\u2019s war with Ukraine,\u00a0saying this week that Kyiv can \u201cwin all of Ukraine back in its original form\u201d.<\/p>\n

Lavrov addressed the US-Russian relationship in his speech on Saturday, saying: \u201cIn the approaches of the current US administration, we see a desire not only to contribute to ways to realistically resolve the Ukrainian crisis, but also a desire to develop pragmatic cooperation without adopting an ideological stance.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a further criticism of the West, Lavrov questioned the timing of recent\u00a0recognition by some countries, including the UK and France, of a Palestinian state\u00a0\u2013 saying that it seemed they had waited so long because they hoped \u201cthere would be no one and nothing left to recognise\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
