Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that Ghana will, in the coming days, receive an additional 40 West African deportees from the United States.<\/p>\n

His disclosure follows Minority criticism of government\u2019s earlier acceptance of 14 deportees, accusing officials of sidestepping parliamentary approval. <\/p>\n

Government has maintained that the arrangement is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the US, which does not require ratification.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Channel One TV\u2019s The Point of View<\/em> on Wednesday, September 17, Ablakwa confirmed the new batch was due soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can reveal to you that we\u2019re expecting another 40 in the next few days. We vet them before they come,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He explained that Ghana\u2019s decision was driven solely by humanitarian concerns after observing the harsh treatment of deportees abroad.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t agree to this because we agree with President Trump\u2019s immigration policies. We\u2019re not doing the US a favour. We\u2019re doing our fellow Africans a favour; we\u2019re offering them refuge, hope, and we want them to come back home and be comfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe solidarised with them when we saw those images, the arrests, the violation of their rights, and their being detained against their will.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was purely on a humanitarian basis; we did not take any financial benefits. We\u2019re doing this because we want to continue to position Ghana as the Mecca for Africans,\u201d Ablakwa stressed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
