But democracy can be renewed when citizens rise to defend it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/sotnews.agency\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/MAHAMA-DEMO-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n<p>Quoting former Czech President V\u00e1clav Havel, he reminded participants that \u201cthe salvation of this human world lies nowhere else than in the human heart.\u201d According to him, \u201cThe survival of democracy depends on us, leaders, citizens, institutions and for us, choosing courage over complacency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President also outlined what he described as the essential pillars of sustaining true democracy in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocracy without development, without roads, without schools, hospitals, and jobs will always be at risk,\u201d President Mahama said, adding that people\u2019s trust in democratic systems can only be maintained when institutions deliver tangible improvements in their daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>He underscored the need to strengthen independent institutions, such as the courts, parliaments, and electoral bodies, while also
