Nepal\u2019s former Supreme Court chief justice Sushila Karki has become the country\u2019s interim prime minister after deadly anti-corruption protests ousted the government.<\/p>\n

The 73-year-old was sworn in during a brief ceremony, becoming the first woman to lead the impoverished Himalayan nation after a deal was reached with protest leaders.<\/p>\n

More than 50 people were killed in clashes with riot police during this week\u2019s mass protests, sparked by a ban on social media platforms.<\/p>\n

The ban was lifted on Monday, but by then, protests had swelled into a mass movement.\u00a0Angry crowds set fire to parliament and government buildings in the capital Kathmandu on Tuesday,\u00a0forcing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign.<\/p>\n

Earlier on Friday, President Ram Chandra Poudel\u2019s press adviser had confirmed to the BBC that Karki would take the oath of office that evening.<\/p>\n

The agreement between the president and the protest leaders was reached after days of consultations. Legal experts were also involved.<\/p>\n

Parliament was dissolved late on Friday and it was announced that general elections would be held on 5 March next year.<\/p>\n

Karki is expected to appoint ministers to her cabinet within a few days.<\/p>\n

She is widely regarded as having a clean image, and her leadership of the interim government is being supported by student leaders from the so-called \u201cGen Z\u201d movement.<\/p>\n

Fire and smoke rise from the Singha Durbar palace, which houses government and parliament buildings, as protesters stormed the premises in Kathmandu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

But her cabinet will face multiple challenges, including restoring law and order, reconstructing parliament and the other key buildings that were attacked, reassuring the Gen Z protesters who want change \u2013 and others in Nepal who are fearful its young democracy and constitutional order could be derailed.<\/p>\n

Another key task will be to bring those responsible for violence to justice.<\/p>\n

Karki\u2019s appointment is a compromise resulting from talks that were brokered by Nepal\u2019s army chief this week. Elated Gen Z supporters are expressing their happiness on social media, and many see this as the next step in the new political course they want the country to take.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Karkivisited the protest site in Kathmandu where 19 people were killed in clashes with police the day before. She also met some of the injured who were being treated in hospital.<\/p>\n

The new PM was born in a family with close contacts with the Koirala political dynasty, from the country\u2019s largest democratic party Nepali Congress, and later married the then-leader Durga Subedi.<\/p>\n

She has said that her husband\u2019s support played a major role in her journey from a lawyer to Nepal\u2019s chief justice in 2016.<\/p>\n

But Karki has not been free from controversy, having faced an impeachment incident during her nearly 11-month tenure as chief justice.<\/p>\n

Nepal\u2019s army is still patrolling the streets of Kathmandu as the country reels from its worst unrest in decades. Restrictions were only briefly lifted to allow residents to buy essential items.<\/p>\n

The protests were triggered by the government\u2019s decision last week to ban 26 social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook \u2013 but they soon widened to embody much deeper discontent with Nepal\u2019s political elite.<\/p>\n

In the weeks before the ban, a \u201cnepo kid\u201d campaign \u2013 spotlighting the lavish lifestyles of politicians\u2019 children and allegations of corruption \u2013 had taken off on social media.<\/p>\n

And while the social media ban was hastily lifted on Monday night, the protests had by that stage gained unstoppable momentum.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
