The NPP Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has filed a complaint with the diplomatic community against the government over what he describes as an \u201calarming wave of arrests\u201d of citizens.<\/p>\n

In a strongly worded petition sent to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana, the MP said the country had been plunged into a \u201cden of terror,\u201d with citizens allegedly being harassed by the government for expressing dissenting views. He therefore urged the diplomatic community to take urgent steps to encourage the government to respect Ghana\u2019s democratic values and uphold the rights of its citizens.<\/p>\n

\u201cI humbly petition your high office to take urgent note of the disturbing developments currently unfolding in our country, Ghana, since the assumption of office by the NDC government on 7 January 2025,\u201d Assafuah wrote in his petition.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, Ghana stands at a dark crossroads in our democratic journey. Our beloved nation has been plunged into a climate of fear and intimidation where dissent is punished and criticism is criminalised. What Ghana is experiencing is not democracy, but an orchestrated campaign of political persecution designed to silence voices that refuse to sing praises to the regime.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MP listed a number of high-profile politicians whom he said had been harassed and detained, as well as ordinary citizens who, according to him, had also been unlawfully detained for expressing dissenting views against the government.<\/p>\n
