The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Ghana\u2019s public debt will decline to about 60 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the end of 2025, attributing the improvement largely to the country\u2019s recent debt restructuring programme.<\/p>\n

At a press briefing in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, 11 September 2025, the IMF\u2019s Director of Communications, Julie Kozack, said the restructuring exercise had materially eased Ghana\u2019s debt burden.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe recent debt restructuring agreement has significantly improved Ghana\u2019s debt service indicators,\u201d she observed, adding that the improved outlook has created space for economic recovery and fresh investment inflows.<\/p>\n

Mrs Kozack described the development as \u201ca particularly steep reduction in Ghana\u2019s public debt\u201d and a meaningful milestone on the path to restoring fiscal sustainability.<\/p>\n

However, she cautioned that sustaining these gains will depend on continued reforms. She emphasised the need to enhance domestic revenue mobilisation, strengthen public financial management systems, and uphold fiscal discipline.<\/p>\n

Figures released by the Bank of Ghana support the IMF\u2019s projection. As of June 2025, the country\u2019s total debt stock stood at GH\u00a2613 billion, equivalent to 43.8 percent of GDP.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
