The Mental Health Authority is concerned about rising suicide cases in the country, revealing that more than 1,600 people have attempted to take their lives in the past 18 months.<\/p>\n

According to data from the District Health Information Management System, 1,174 suicide attempts were recorded in 2024, in addition to 475 attempts in the first half of 2025. <\/p>\n

The country also lost 134 lives to suicide last year, representing a 40 per cent increase compared to 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to data from the District Health Information Management System (DHIMS), Ghana
lost 134 lives to suicide in 2024, a 40% increase from 2023, while 1,174 people attempted suicide. In the first half of 2025 alone, 475 attempts have been reported. <\/p>\n

Dr. Dordoye stressed that behind each statistic is a life cut short and a family devastated, calling for urgent action,\u201d disclosed in a press statement issued to mark the World Suicide Prevention Day.<\/p>\n

Speaking at an event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day 2025, the Acting Chief Executive of the Authority, Dr Eugene K. Dordoye, described the statistics as deeply worrying. <\/p>\n

\u201cBehind each statistic is a life cut short and a family devastated,\u201d he said. \u201cThese figures call for urgent action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Dordoye emphasised the need to intensify public education, strengthen community support systems, and train frontline workers to identify early warning signs. <\/p>\n

He also underscored the importance of sustainable funding for suicide prevention programmes, and called for stronger partnerships between government, civil society, and communities.<\/p>\n

He appealed to the media to report responsibly on suicide, avoiding sensationalism and instead highlighting resilience and available helplines. \u201cBe partners in hope, not amplifiers of despair,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n
