Multiple people have been killed and dozens more injured after a tornado ripped through Iowa, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

The US\u00a0National Weather Service<\/a>\u00a0issued a tornado warning for the deadly storm system just after 3:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, May 21.<\/p>\n

Initial storm surveys confirmed the tornado in Greenfield \u2014 a town of about 2,100 people, according to\u00a0U.S. Census data<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 caused \u201cat least EF-3 damage,\u201d according to the\u00a0agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla confirmed the tornado caused \u201cfatalities and injuries within the community of Greenfield,\u201d but did not offer specific numbers, according to a news release from the\u00a0Iowa Department of Public Safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Among those killed are an unidentified couple and a third individual, according to\u00a0The Weather Channel<\/a>. Cynthia Jenson, a cousin of one of the victims, said she knew all three individuals.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was heartbreaking,\u201d Jenson told the station while describing the damage she witnessed. \u201cI mean, there are\u00a0houses that are gone\u00a0that you always saw. You knew the landmarks in town to get\u00a0to\u00a0where you needed to go. So yeah, it\u2019s awful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drone footage\u00a0captured by professional storm chasers Reed Timmer and Mike Scantlin showed the massive twister barrelling through the small town.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

Several wind turbines were knocked down by the twister, which storm chasers also\u00a0filmed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Adair County Memorial Hospital sustained damage as well, though teams still \u201cworked swiftly to assist the injured,\u201d according to Dinkla.<\/p>\n

The Greenfield Community School District is serving as both a reunification point and a temporary shelter following the storm, according to the sergeant.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis town has a long road ahead of them, but if their actions today are any indication of what lies ahead, they will emerge stronger and more united than ever before,\u201d Dinkla told reporters Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n

A food and water donation site has been established at the Department of Transportation (DOT) Facility at 2313 Highway 92, Dinkla added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe community of Greenfield has shown incredible unity during this challenging time, with neighbors and friends displaying remarkable compassion, empathy, and support,\u201d Dinkla said at Tuesday\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n

At least 20 tornadoes touched down across the Midwest on Tuesday, according to\u00a0ABC News<\/a>. At least 18 twisters were recorded in Iowa,\u00a0CNN<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n

Tornadoes have been ravaging the Midwest and Southern states since March, and more are expected on Wednesday. This time, the highest risk for twisters is in portions of central and eastern Texas, southwest Arkansas and northwest Louisiana, according to the\u00a0NWS Storm Prediction Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n
