The Minority Caucus in Parliament has cautioned the government against using political witch-hunts to divert attention from the escalating humanitarian crisis in northern Ghana, where recent communal violence has left dozens dead and thousands displaced.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, and signed by Jerry Ahmed Shaib, 2nd Deputy Minority Whip and MP for Weija-Gbawe, the Caucus said the state\u2019s fixation on political persecution risks overshadowing urgent national emergencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur northern compatriots deserve urgent intervention, not the neglect and indifference that have characterised the state\u2019s response so far. Political witch-hunts cannot be used as a smokescreen to deflect attention from this humanitarian disaster,\u201d the statement stressed.<\/p>\n

According to the Minority, communal violence in the north has already claimed at least 31 lives, displaced nearly 50,000 people, and forced over 13,000 to seek refuge in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire. The situation, they noted, has become a regional humanitarian emergency that demands immediate intervention.<\/p>\n

The Caucus further argued that government\u2019s focus on the arrest and remand of political figures, such as Bono Regional NPP Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC), reflects misplaced priorities at a time when the state should be channeling resources and leadership toward protecting vulnerable citizens.<\/p>\n

They described the neglect of the crisis as a \u201cbetrayal of government\u2019s basic duty to protect its people\u201d and urged authorities to rise above partisan politics in responding to national emergencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cCitizens must not be abandoned to seek refuge across international borders in search of safety. This is not just a local tragedy, but a shameful indictment of governance failures,\u201d the Minority warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Minority Caucus reiterates that this government has abandoned its constitutional obligations, choosing instead the path of authoritarian consolidation. Judicial persecution, executive overreach, economic manipulation, and security failures have converged into a perfect storm that endangers both democracy and development in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n
