A federal appeals court on Monday refused to throw out an $83.3 million jury verdict against U.S. President\u00a0Donald Trump\u00a0for damaging the reputation of the writer E. Jean Carroll in 2019 when he denied her rape claim.<\/p>\n

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan rejected Trump\u2019s argument that the\u00a0January 2024\u00a0verdict should be overturned because he deserved presidential immunity.<\/p>\n

It also faulted Trump\u2019s persistence in attacking Carroll, with attacks against the former Elle magazine columnist becoming \u201cmore extreme and frequent\u201d as the trial approached.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe record in this case supports the district court\u2019s determination that the \u2018degree of reprehensibility\u2019 of Mr. Trump\u2019s conduct was remarkably high, perhaps unprecedented,\u201d the unanimous three-judge panel said in its unsigned decision.<\/p>\n

A different jury in\u00a0May 2023\u00a0found Trump liable to Carroll for sexual abuse and defamation, but not rape, and awarded her $5 million. The appeals court\u00a0upheld\u00a0that verdict in June.<\/p>\n

Both verdicts are among a slew of legal woes Trump faced after leaving the White House in 2021.<\/p>\n

The Republican denied all wrongdoing, and on the campaign trail, portrayed his courtroom battles as part of a Democratic-led plot to undermine his ultimately successful 2024 campaign.<\/p>\n

Trump is appealing other courtroom losses, including his May 2024\u00a0criminal conviction\u00a0for falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal, and a fraud finding in New York Attorney General Letitia James\u2019\u00a0civil lawsuit\u00a0over his family business.<\/p>\n

The appeals are continuing, though Trump received no prison time in the criminal case, and persuaded a New York state appeals court to throw out a roughly half-billion-dollar penalty in the civil case.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Monday, Trump\u2019s lawyers said: \u201cPresident Trump will keep winning against Liberal Lawfare, as he is focusing on his mission to Make America Great Again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carroll\u2019s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, said in a statement: \u201cWe look forward to an end to the appellate process so that justice will finally be done.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
