Beyonc\u00e9\u00a0is facing a new lawsuit over one of her hit singles.<\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0complaint reviewed by<\/a>\u00a0Billboard<\/em><\/a>, the 42-year-old singer, her record label Sony Music, and other parties are being sued by Da Showstoppaz, a New Orleans-based group that claims Beyonc\u00e9 infringed their 2002 song \u201cRelease a Wiggle<\/a>\u201d for her 2022\u00a0Renaissance<\/em>\u00a0single \u201cBreak My Soul<\/a>\u201d by legally sampling Big Freedia\u2019s 2014 song \u201cExplode<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Big Freedia, 46, legally known as Freddie Ross, who Da Showstoppaz accused of illegally lifting key lyrics from their song to create \u201cExplode,\u201d is also named as a defendant in the suit.<\/p>\n\n

The lawsuit, filed in Louisiana federal court, centres on the phrase \u201crelease yo wiggle\u201d and related variations, which the group claims are unique to their song.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cWhile Mrs. Carter\u2026and others have received many accolades and substantial profits\u2026Da Showstoppaz\u2019s have received nothing\u2014no acknowledgement, no credit, no remuneration of any kind,\u201d wrote the group\u2019s attorneys, per\u00a0Billboard<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Da Showstoppaz\u2019 legal reps also claim that Big Freedia\u2019s use of these phrases in their single \u201cExplode\u201d infringes on the group\u2019s copyrights, contributing to the artist\u2019s fame without crediting them.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe infringing phrase \u2018release yo\u2019 wiggle\u2019 and several other substantially similar phrases are featured prominently in the song and evenly spread out across Explode\u2019s two-minute and forty-seven second runtime,\u201d the lawyers added.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny reasonable person listening to \u2018Release A Wiggle\u2019 and \u2018Explode\u2019 would conclude that the songs are substantially similar.\u201d<\/p>\n

Billboard<\/em>\u00a0also notes that copyright law typically doesn\u2019t protect \u201cshort, simple phrases\u201d and that a court could hypothetically dismiss the case.<\/p>\n

Despite this, Da Showstoppaz\u2019 lawyers feel confident in their case, adding they \u201chave a copyright to their unique and distinctive lyrics\u201d that were allegedly infringed upon by Freedia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe coined term and phrase \u2018release a\/yo wiggle\u2019 has now become closely synonymous with Big Freedia, thereby contributing to Big Freedia\u2019s fame,\u201d wrote the lawyers further into the suit. \u201c<\/div>\n

However, Big Fredia did not compose or write the phrase, and Big Freedia never credited Da Showstoppaz as the source.\u201d<\/div>\n

Da Showstoppaz claim they first learned about Big Freedia\u2019s \u201cExplode\u201d through Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s \u201cBreak My Soul.\u201d They also say they contacted Beyonc\u00e9 and others about the alleged infringement but did not receive a response.<\/p>\n

\u201cBreak My Soul\u201d was the surprise lead single for Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s blockbuster\u00a0Renaissance<\/em>\u00a0LP.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Billboard<\/em>, the song, which also samples Robin S.\u2019s \u201cShow Me Love<\/a>,\u201d topped the\u00a0Hot 100 chart for two weeks<\/a>, becoming her\u00a0first solo No. 1 hit in 14 years<\/a>\u00a0since 2008\u2019s \u201cSingle Ladies<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
