The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, joined thousands of runners and fitness enthusiasts at Black Star Square to launch the 10th edition of the Millennium Marathon, a flagship event promoting health, unity, and grassroots sports in Ghana.<\/p>\n

The Minister served as the Start Referee for the 5km and 21km races, which coursed through the heart of Accra. His participation underscored government\u2019s continued support for initiatives that advance preventive health, youth empowerment, and sports tourism.<\/p>\n

In his keynote address, the Minister reflected on the decade-long journey of the Millennium Marathon since its inception in 2015.<\/p>\n

He praised the organisers for sustaining the event and building an international platform that has encouraged healthy living while uncovering athletic talent.<\/p>\n

Citing the story of long-distance runner William Amponsah, who rose from competing in the marathon to winning silver at the African Games, Hon. Adams described it as proof of Ghanaian athletes\u2019 potential when given structured support.<\/p>\n

The Minister urged organisers to expand the marathon\u2019s reach nationwide to ensure greater participation and stronger community involvement.<\/p>\n

He also reiterated government\u2019s renewed focus on sports development, highlighting plans for the revival of school sports, the establishment of a School Sports Agency, and investment in modern sports infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cSport is no longer just about competition, but a catalyst for job creation, youth empowerment, and economic growth. It must be fully integrated into our national development agenda,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The MP for Buem constituency further spotlighted the forthcoming National Recreation and Wellness Programme, scheduled to be launched later this month.<\/p>\n

The initiative will institutionalise monthly fitness activities across all regions, promoting wellness, eco-tourism, and community cohesion.<\/p>\n

Marking its 10th anniversary, the Millennium Marathon not only celebrated its legacy of fitness and unity but also served as a prelude to Ghana\u2019s broader national wellness agenda.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
