Spain\u2019s football federation is taking its case to \u2060the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA rejected an appeal against sanctions imposed for Islamophobic chants by supporters during a match against Egypt in March.<\/p>\n

FIFA fined the \u2060federation (RFEF) $20,000 and ordered it to close at least 15% of the available seats for Spain\u2019s next home friendly.<\/p>\n

The sanctions<\/a> follow incidents at the RCDE Stadium near Barcelona, home of LaLiga club Espanyol, where \u2060some Spain fans chanted<\/a>, \u201cIf you don\u2019t jump, you\u2019re a Muslim\u201d during the goalless World Cup warm-up match.<\/p>\n

After the second occurrence of the chant, the stadium announcer issued a warning and the scoreboard displayed a message against discriminatory behaviour.<\/p>\n

Spain winger Lamine Yamal, who is Muslim, condemned the chants<\/a> at \u200cthe time, describing them as disrespectful and intolerable and calling those responsible \u201cignorant and racist\u201d.<\/p>\n

Spanish police launched an investigation<\/a> the following day while world governing body FIFA later started disciplinary proceedings against the RFEF.<\/p>\n

The RFEF argued that the word \u2018Muslim\u2019 was \u201cneither insulting nor pejorative\u201d, adding the fans\u2019 conduct should be assessed under FIFA\u2019s Article 17, which covers political, ideological, religious or offensive messages, rather than Article 15, which deals with discrimination and racist abuse.<\/p>\n

FIFA\u2019s disciplinary committee rejected that argument, saying Article 15 \u2060does not require the explicit use of a slur and that a \u2060term can be discriminatory when used in context as \u201can insult, taunt, or marker of inferiority\u201d.<\/p>\n

The RFEF appealed the sanction, but a FIFA spokesperson told Reuters that it was dismissed last week, prompting the Spanish federation to take the \u2060case to CAS, the highest authority in sports disputes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout the proceedings, the RFEF has maintained that it acted immediately, diligently and effectively from the moment \u2060it became aware of the incidents,\u201d a high-ranking official in the \u2060RFEF told Reuters.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore, the measures taken ensured that the chants were not repeated and that the spectators present in the stadium themselves expressed their disapproval of such behaviour.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official said the federation considered the sanctions particularly severe, arguing that comparable capacity restrictions \u200chad not been imposed automatically in more serious cases or those involving previous disciplinary offences.<\/p>\n

The chants were detected by the RFEF\u2019s monitoring systems and immediately reported to the match \u200cofficials, \u200cthe official said, adding that security was reinforced in the affected section of the stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe federation cooperated fully with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
