The Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has described the statistics of road traffic fatalities in the metropolis as alarming, and\u00a0the\u00a0Accra Metropolitan\u00a0Assembly\u00a0(AMA)\u00a0will\u00a0scale\u00a0up interventions\u00a0to reduce them.<\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0report launched\u00a0by the\u00a0national partners of the\u00a0Bloomberg Philanthropies\u00a0Initiative\u00a0for Global Road Safety(BIGRS)\u00a0at a meeting,\u00a0Accra recorded\u00a034 per cent increase in road traffic fatalities\u00a0in 2024.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0report\u00a0said\u00a0pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists\u00a0made-up 86 per cent of all deaths,\u00a0and that pedestrians accounted for more than half of the deaths,\u00a0which\u00a0underscored the vulnerability of non-motorised road\u00a0users in the capital<\/p>\n

It\u00a0highlighted hotspots in Accra\u00a0as\u00a0Kwashieman intersection (N1), North Dzorwulu intersection (N1), Flat\u00a0Top\u00a0Junction (N1), Abeka\u00a0Junction, and ABii National\u00a0Junction on the J.A Kufuor Avenue, with nearly half of all fatal crashes in the city occurring on weekends, between\u00a02000 hours\u00a0and\u00a02200 hours.<\/p>\n

Mr Allotey in a speech read\u00a0on his behalf\u00a0at the meeting said,\u00a0\u201cThese overwhelming numbers must stir us to double our efforts in various interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u00a0said\u00a0the AMA\u00a0had\u00a0re-introduced\u00a0the \u2018Red Line Policy\u2019\u00a0to clear the pavements of hawkers\u00a0to safeguard pedestrians, adding that, \u201cThe clearing of\u00a0the walkways is a difficult task\u00a0but a necessary decision to protect lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The MCE said despite the rise in road\u00a0fatalities, there were signs of progress in speed control, citing a decline\u00a0in speeding from 49 per cent in March 2024 to 44 per cent\u00a0in September 2024, largely due to\u00a0road traffic\u00a0laws and awareness campaigns.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0said\u00a0motorcyclists\u00a0remained the\u00a0most\u00a0reckless\u00a0among the speeding category, recording 57 per cent and called on\u00a0the Police\u00a0personnel of the\u00a0Motor Traffic and Transport Department\u00a0to intensify the laws against them.<\/p>\n

Mr Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, who was at the meeting\u00a0said his metropolis faced similar situations\u00a0and called for improvement of\u00a0streetlights, safe walking space, and public education to protect road users.<\/p>\n

Mr Abraham Amaliba, the Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority said road crashes had become more than a traffic management issue, describing them as a public health and national security concern.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0added\u00a0that an estimated\u00a0eight people, including children, lose their lives daily on Ghana\u2019s roads, which also results in significant economic losses.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough we have recorded a slight decrease in speeding in both Accra and Kumasi, we cannot be complacent,\u201d Mr Amaliba\u00a0stated.<\/p>\n

He called for stricter enforcement of licensing regulations and more consistent compliance checks on vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
