A 15-year-old boy has been sentenced to seven years in juvenile detention for shooting Colombian presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay at a rally in Bogot\u00e1 in June.<\/p>\n

The conservative senator, who was 39, underwent multiple surgeries after being hit by three bullets but died on 11 August.<\/p>\n

The teenager was charged with attempted murder and the illegal possession of firearms.<\/p>\n

After years of growing peace, the shooting shocked Colombians, who still remembered the political violence of the 1980s and 90s when several presidential candidates and influential Colombian figures were assassinated.<\/p>\n

Five others have been arrested and charged in relation to the attack,\u00a0including suspected criminal \u00c9lder Jos\u00e9 Arteaga Hern\u00e1ndez.<\/p>\n

Police say they believe a dissident group of the former left-wing Farc rebels was behind the assassination.<\/p>\n

Uribe was shot in the head at a campaign rally on 7 June, with unverified video of the assassination widely circulated online.<\/p>\n

Local media reports suggest that after the teenager was arrested, he cried out: \u201cI did it for money for my family.\u201d<\/p>\n

The senator was a popular member of the right-wing Democratic Centre party, and had been seeking his party\u2019s nomination for the 2026 presidential election.<\/p>\n

His father, Miguel Uribe Londo\u00f1o, announced his own presidential campaign earlier this week, in what he said was an effort keep his son\u2019s legacy alive.<\/p>\n

Uribe Londo\u00f1o was a member of Bogot\u00e1\u2019s city council in the late 80s and a senator for Colombia\u2019s Conservative Party in the early 90s.<\/p>\n

During that time period, several presidential candidates and influential Colombian figures were killed,\u00a0including Uribe\u2019s own mother, journalist Diana Turbay.<\/p>\n

She was kidnapped by Los Extraditables in 1990 \u2013 an alliance created by leading drug lords. She was held hostage by them for five months before being shot dead during a botched rescue attempt.<\/p>\n

Uribe often cited her as his inspiration to run for political office \u201cto work for our country\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
