United States-based investment fund Oaktree Capital Management said on Wednesday it has become the new owner of\u00a0Serie A champions\u00a0Inter Milan\u00a0after a missed \u20ac395 million ($428m) payment from the club\u2019s Chinese holding company, Suning.<\/p>\n

Granted in 2021 to the Luxembourg-based vehicle through which Chinese conglomerate Suning controlled Inter, the loan was guaranteed by the firm\u2019s stake in the club.<\/p>\n

Under such a scheme, Oaktree had the potential right to take control of the club in the event of a default.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur initial focus is operational and financial stability. We have great respect for Inter Milan\u2019s management team,\u201d Oaktree managing director Alejandro Cano said.<\/p>\n

Inter becomes the seventh Serie A club under American ownership. The others are\u00a0AC Milan,\u00a0Atalanta,\u00a0Fiorentina, Roma,\u00a0Genoa\u00a0and newly-promoted\u00a0Parma.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1908, Inter are among the most famous clubs in Italian football, having won the league 20 times, and are home to top players including\u00a0Lautaro Mart\u00ednez\u00a0and\u00a0Nicol\u00f2 Barella.<\/p>\n

Suning bought a majority stake in the club in 2016 in one of the highest profile forays by a Chinese business into European football.<\/p>
