They will include a checklist to consider before booking a procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Health minister Karin Smyth warned that \u201ctoo many people are being left with life-altering injuries after going abroad for medical procedures, without access to proper advice or safeguards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said the partnership with TikTok would help people \u201cmake safer and more informed choices before they go under the knife \u2013 wherever that may be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Things to check before you book:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do thorough research about the procedure<\/li>\n<li>Check the clinic\u2019s regulations and the surgeon\u2019s credentials<\/li>\n<li>Know the full cost and understand the aftercare<\/li>\n<li>Ask the vital question \u2013 if it goes wrong, who will fix it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When cosmetic procedures go wrong, the consequences can be devastating for patients.<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, Leah Mattson\u00a0travelled to \u0130zmir in Turkey\u00a0to have gastric sleeve surgery.<\/p>\n<p>While the surgery was initially successful and helped her lose weight, last year the 27-year-old returned to the same company to remove excess skin.<\/p>\n<p>This time, the procedure left her with a lopsided belly button, deep scarring on her arms and stomach area that she says left her feeling worse.<\/p>\n<p>After seeing the results of her surgery, Leah said she burst into tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just wanted to cry, and I feel like I actually disliked my body more than when I was overweight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leah found the clinic on social media and was encouraged by other people\u2019s positive experiences with similar surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn apps like Instagram and TikTok, you search for weight-loss surgery and see the majority of people go to Turkey,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was thinking, well, all these people have had great experiences, so I\u2019m going to go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just trusted them because I thought, well, if they\u2019re okay, then I\u2019ll be okay, and I didn\u2019t really pay much attention to the horror stories,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think it would ever happen to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leah now documents her experience on social media, using her platform to inform others about the risks involved in similar procedures.<\/p>\n<p>The clinic, which performed Leah\u2019s surgery in Turkey, could not be reached for comment, but they previously issued a statement saying \u201cplastic surgery isn\u2019t straightforward and unfortunately some health issues or complications cannot be anticipated\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Experts are urging people to think beyond the slick brochures and marketing, and to consider clinical standards, complication risks, and language barriers.<\/p>\n<p>The Foreign Office will also provide more detailed travel advice for those considering going overseas for such procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Office Minister Stephen Doughty said: \u201cIf you choose to travel abroad for medical treatment, it is vital you do your research and are fully aware of the risks involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge anyone considering a medical procedure abroad to review our travel advice, relevant guidance from the NHS and other professional bodies, and research foreign providers thoroughly to ensure they meet the highest standard of care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformed choices today can help avoid serious complications tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ali Law, TikTok\u2019s UK public policy lead, said the platform was \u201ccommitted\u201d to helping users find \u201cinformation from trusted sources when searching for topics related to physical and mental health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, ministers outlined\u00a0plans to reduce unsafe cosmetic treatments in England.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new rules, only \u201csuitably qualified\u201d and regulated health workers will be allowed to deliver high-risk procedures such as Brazilian butt lifts.<\/p>\n<p>Clinics offering lower-risk procedures such as Botox and fillers will need a licence, and age limits will be introduced to stop children from copying
