Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has announced five days of mourning following the death of the country\u2019s President, Ebrahim Raisi.<\/p>\n

Mr Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash in a mountainous area of north-western Iran, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.<\/p>\n

State media confirmed they were killed after the helicopter they were travelling in came down on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Ayatollah Khamenei said he offered his condolences \u201cto the dear people of Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mr Raisi, 63, had been tipped as a potential successor to the supreme leader.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed to assume interim duties after the death of the president.<\/p>\n

Mr Mokhber will work with the heads of Iran\u2019s legislature and judiciary to prepare for a presidential election within 50 days \u2013 a period of time set out in Iran\u2019s constitution for replacing a president who dies in office.<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s cabinet has also appointed deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani as acting foreign minister.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was initially reported that the helicopter carrying the men and their entourage had made a hard landing in foggy conditions.<\/p>\n

The area where the aircraft came down is close to the border with Azerbaijan, where Mr Raisi had been meeting President Ilham Aliyev.<\/p>\n

According to local media he was there to open the Qiz Qalasi and Khodaafarin dams.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the Iranian Red Crescent confirmed the bodies of the president and others who died in the crash had been recovered and search operations had ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in the process of transferring the bodies of the martyrs to Tabriz [in Iran\u2019s north-west],\u201d the organisation\u2019s chief said on state TV.<\/p>\n

Iranian news outlet Tasnim, which is affiliated to the country\u2019s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, reported that President Ebrahim Raisi\u2019s funeral will be held on Tuesday in Tabriz.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mr Raisi, 63, was a hard-line cleric and his election as president in 2021 consolidated the control of conservatives over every part of the Islamic Republic.<\/p>\n

In a statement following his death, the Iranian government said it would continue to operate \u201cwithout disruption\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A number of countries have expressed their condolences following President Raisi\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a national day of mourning and described Mr Raisi and Mr Amir-Abdollahian as \u201cgood friends of Iran\u201d.<\/p>\n

Writing on social media, India\u2019s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was \u201cdeeply saddened and shocked\u201d by the deaths.<\/p>\n

Turkey\u2019s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his government was \u201cin full contact and co-ordination with the Iranian authorities\u201d and was ready to \u201cprovide any necessary support\u201d.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his condolences and said the president and foreign minister were \u201ctrue, reliable friends of our country\u201d, while China\u2019s President Xi Jinping said Mr Raisi had contributed to Iran\u2019s security and stability.<\/p>\n

The EU on Monday expressed its \u201csincere condolences\u201d and European Council President Charles Michel said \u201cour thoughts go to the families\u201d.<\/p>\n

Hamas praised Mr Raisi\u2019s support of the Palestinian group, while the Tehran-backed Hezbollah movement in Lebanon said it was mourning the death of its protector.<\/p>\n<\/div>
