US President Donald Trump has said he will try to get some territory back for Ukraine during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia\u2019s occupied a big portion of Ukraine. They occupied prime territory. We\u2019re going to try to get some of that territory back for Ukraine,\u201d he told a news conference.<\/p>\n

He and the Russian president are due to hold talks in Alaska at the end of the week. Trump claimed that he could know within two minutes of meeting Putin whether progress was possible.<\/p>\n

He said Friday would be a \u201cfeel-out meeting\u201d aimed at urging Putin to end the war \u2013 suggesting he may view the summit as just an initial encounter.<\/p>\n

Trump again warned that there would be \u201csome swapping, changes in land\u201d between Russia and Ukraine.<\/p>\n

It is not the first time he has used the phrase \u201cland-swapping\u201d, though it is unclear what land Russia could cede to Ukraine.Kyiv has never laid claim to any Russian territories.<\/p>\n

Trump said he will update European leaders if Putin proposes a \u201cfair deal\u201d during the talks, adding that he would speak to Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelensky first \u201cout of respect\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll call him first\u2026 I\u2019ll call him after, and I may say, \u2018lots of luck, keep fighting,\u2019 or I may say, \u2018we can make a deal’\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Trump also said that while he and Zelensky \u201cget along\u201d, he \u201cvery severely disagrees with what [the Ukrainian president] has done\u201d.Trump has previously blamed Zelensky for the war in Ukraine, which was sparked by Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022.<\/p>\n

He stated that a future meeting could include Zelensky and could be a three-way session including himself and Putin.<\/p>\n

However, the Kremlin has always played down expectations of a meeting with Zelensky, with Putin reiterating recently the conditions to meet the Ukrainian president were still far off.<\/p>\n

Trump announced the meeting with Putin last Friday \u2013 the day of his self-imposed deadline for Russia to agree to a ceasefire or face more US sanctions.<\/p>\n

In response to news of the Alaska summit, Zelensky said any agreements without input from Kyiv would amount to \u201cdead decisions\u201d.<\/p>\n

On Monday he also cited a report from Ukraine\u2019s intelligence service saying there was no sign Russia was preparing to put an end to the fighting in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Zelensky is expected to attend a virtual meeting with Trump, US Vice-President JD Vance, and EU leaders on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he invited the leaders as well as EU and Nato chiefs, to discuss how to pressure Moscow ahead of Trump\u2019s meeting with Putin.<\/p>\n

The EU\u2019s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, said any US-Russia deal to end the war must include Ukraine and Europe more widely.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransatlantic unity, support to Ukraine and pressure on Russia is how we will end this war and prevent future Russian aggression in Europe,\u201d she said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
